warning: check warranty period on GM tube! (30 days)
I ordered one of these and happy with the design, but the GM tube died just outside of the 30-day warranty period (counter always shows zero/no activity now). International Medcom support was helpful - but the tube is the most expensive component in the package.Apparently, GM tubes losing their gas is not uncommon. I was unable to find information on average failure rates/stddev/etc, so be warned that it may last quite a while, or die quickly like mine (it was kept in an office, and never used in a harsh environment - only used a few times total). The GM tube is an LND3717 (a high quality tube). LND offers 6 month warranty on the tube itself vs. the 30 day on the Inspector Alert.

A wonderful device, but lacks modern interfaces.
This unit is one of the golden standards for field Geiger-Mueller devices, but it lacks any modern interface for USB, WiFi, GPS, etc. It has a nice wide pancake style detector, so the surface area for detection is better than many other devices. The only output is a 3.5mm audio cable style connector that sets 5 volts to the tip of the connector when an event is detected. International Medcom also sells an adapter that converts the 3.5mm cable to DB9 serial along with software in a bundle, but I think they are missing the mark for a lot of consumers that purchase this device on Amazon. The bundle costs around $100 at the time I'm writing this, and the software license is very restrictive. You only get to install the software on one machine, and if you ever upgrade your rig.. Another $100. International Medcom does offer other devices that support USB, so if you want to join a network to report your data online I would not recommend this unit.If you want a standalone rugged GC for field work though, this is a good choice. One good example would be using this unit for surface testing, and if it reports numbers greater than typical background, then you'd know to gather some samples for further spectroscopic analysis.

excellent for monitoring your family's safety
Looking for a way to reassure myself and family, I found many reviews touting the benefits and features of this easily used, easy to comprehend, but scientifically accurate and intensely comprehensive monitoring of alpha, beta, and gamma radiation. I use it for monitoring air, precipitation, food stuffs, and this spring, my garden/greenhouse. Keep informed with enenews.com and your own monitor. Don't trust the government to tell you when things are unsafe. Become self reliant and make informed decisions with this investment in your and your children's future.

Great tester.
Hello guys!Y have been using this product to detect radiation in a mining project and it have been performing flawlessly. Its very easy to use and require regular batteries. Not very cool looking but it works great.

Used this for yrs at national lab
I've used this same model for many years without any problems that I didn't create myself. It worked great up until the day I dropped it on a hard floor & broke the tube. I sent it back for a replacement tube & they returned it to me quickly with it calibrated too. If you're serious about having a device for checking radiation then in my opinion from experience you can't go wrong buying this item. It works well, reliably, & is still working 6-7 years later.
