Complete Albums Collection

Having just bought and received this wonderful reissue of Simon and Garfunkel complete albums collection on the strength of some of the reviewers' comments, I can definitely recommend this new box set for purchase even if, like me you may already have some of the albums either on cd or lp. The reason? To do with the quality of the mastering or remastering. I am surprised that no one in their review has mentioned this in detail. The production credit details given in the booklet do not mention whether all the albums have been remastered or not, which is a pity. However, we are told that the services of Sony Music Japan were hired for this production with the names of the people involved, which suggests to me that Sony did not want to compromise on the quality of this new box set and produce these albums in the best possible conditions and with the aim of obtaining the highest possible sound quality.The results are there to prove it. The improvement over the previous original issues is not small . It is massive in terms of low level detail reproduction, dynamics and musicality. It has to be heard to be believed. To give you an example, I played the album Bridge over troubled water. On track one, the piano has greater body and sounds more life like and Simon and Garfunkel' voices have more presence; track two is simply mind blowing. The sound just jumps out of the speakers with incredible dynamics and realism. On track ten, Bye bye love, you can easily hear the clapping from the audience which used to sound ill defined as well as the acoustics and size of the venue.The improvement to the sound is most noticeable on the earlier albums which are now so much better with the sound reproduced showing greater dynamics, greater definition, separation and presence. This results in a greater musical enjoyment with the quality of sound being probably as good as the master tapes. There is no doubt in my mind that all the albums here have been carefully restored and remastered as the magnitude of the improvement is significant and similar to that experienced on the two double albums Hot rocks and More hot rocks with The Rolling Stones, remastered and reissued on sacd. Anybody who already has these albums in their collection will understand what I mean. On these remastered reissues, you feel as though you are taking part in the recording process with low level details being so clear. With the new issue of these Simon and Garfunkel albums, there is a sense of greater involvement on the part of the listeners. The music has definitely gained in terms of realism as well as greater impact. I am therefore rather surprised to have read the negative comments with regards to the quality of the sound on Amazon.com. I have not had a chance to compare these albums with the 2001 remastered production and there may be little difference between them. All I can say though is that the 2014 edition is impressive.Incidentally, wouldn 't it have been great too if this box set had been issued on sacd format like the Stones, but hey, you can't have it all for nothing.So, to buy or not to buy ? No shakespearean dilemmas here. Definitely, for sure, undoubtedly, without the shadow of a doubt, whether you love music properly reproduced,whether you are a Simon and Garfunkel fan or an audiophile looking for demo material. Yes, the new issue is so good that these albums in their latest reicarnation can be used for demo purposes, using a high end system like mine. More importantly, you will hear the improvements regardless of the kind of system you are using and whether it is high end or not. Superb democratic sound for everyone !

Simon and Garfunkel started out as a duo heavily influenced by the Everly Brothers and rock ‘n’ roll. Paul Simon was the one who wrote the songs and those songs are now some of the greatest in the history of modern music, while Art Garfunkel added an angelic voice that helped those songs touch the soul. And while they parted ways after Bridge Over Trouble Water (only to collaborate on and off over the next 40 years) Simon continued to write brilliant songs on an incredibly illustrious solo career. Well it’s all here on this lavish box from Sony Legacy, all 5 studio albums, a greatest hits and 4 live albums that include the mother of all reunion albums live at Central Park 1981. Old Friends from 2003 sees the duo perform with an stellar band and up to date renderings of class songs. The other two live cuts are a duo only concert from 1967 and a band effort from 1969. While there is an albums collection with the 5 studio albums with extra tracks and Central Park on DVD only, there’s no sign of any bonus cuts here but you do get a booklet with sleeve notes and album credits. Overall this is a must have set and well worth every penny.There is also a Paul Simon solo box from Sony and I’d recommend getting that too if you can!

I won't go into too many details here as many other reviewers have posted much more thorough reviews, but what you get in this set is all Simon & Garfunkel's albums (including the soundtrack to 'The Graduate' and their first 'Greatest Hits') in card repro album style slipcases in a larger outer card slipcase, with a booklet which contains a good career-overview essay and some album notes.My minor nit picks are these; for some bizarre reason the albums all have a white border on the cover which was not present on the original LP's, and there are no bonus tracks. However, they are minor things and don't detract from the great value of this set.Some people may question the inclusion of the Greatest Hits, but that album does have unique versions of one or two tracks. The inclusion of four live albums may also seem excessive, but each of them captures S & G at different phases in their career; in 1967 post career breakthrough, but before 'The Graduate' / 'Bookends' made them major stars; 1969 when they were established stars but had yet to release the seminal 'Bridge Over Troubled Water'; their massive spontaneous reunion concert in central park in 1981; and from their reunion in 2003.This is a bargain set, and though more expensive than the other Simon & Garfunkel boxed set is more comprehensive and well worth the money. If you have money to spare you might consider picking them both up - as the other set contains a DVD of the concert in Central Park and bonus tracks. With them together you may find you have more Simon & Garfunkel than you could ever need... if that's possible.
